The move comes after WhatsApp reportedly turned down a 1$ billion acquisition offer from Google last year.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the combination of WhatsApp and Facebook:

Will allow us to deliver new and engaging mobile experiences.

WhatsApp will continue to operate independently and will maintain its brand. While co-founder and CEO Jan Koum is set to join Facebook’s board of directors for the moment WhatsApp will continue as its own brand. No information on whether WhatsApp will remina free, go paid or start to introduce adverts.

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval.
