Samsung Unveil Galaxy S5 Handset

Samsung have unveiled the Galaxy S5 handset at their Mobile World Congress ‘unboxing’ event today.

The annual release of what is currently the most popular Android handset available has occurred, and Samsung have brought out the latest in their flagship Galaxy lineup, the Galaxy S5.

The Galaxy S5 features a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 3GB of RAM, a 2,800 mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat.

Visually the phone is very similar to last years Galaxy S4 but Samsung have packed in a few new features under the hood.

New Toys

This year Samsung has effectively pinched the latest features from every other major manufacturer. It has included the IR Remote blaster from the HTC One, the fingerprint sensor from the Apple iPhone 5S and the waterproof coating (“IP67 Dust and water Resistant” up to 1 metre) from the Sony Z1. But hey, if it’s shown to be a popular with consumers – and all of these features have found fans, then Samsung can be relied upon to shoehorn it in.

Samsung has also confirmed that the device will come in four different colours: “charcoal Black, shimmery White, electric Blue and copper Gold.”

Fitness

2014 will definitely be the year of personal fitness tracking, with things like the Huawei Talkband B1, Apple making greater use of their M7 processor, and Samsung including S Health 3.0 in the new S5. They state that this:

… provides a comprehensive personal fitness tracker to help users monitor and manage their behavior, along with additional tools including a pedometer, diet and exercise records, and a new, built-in heart rate monitor.

Release Date

The Galaxy S5 will be available worldwide in April. Pricing for the device has not yet been announced
