Sky Store Adds Ability To Buy Movies To Own

Sky television have updated their Sky Store app to add the ability to buy movies to own, rather than just rent them.

The new feature will let customers buy, watch and keep many of the latest and best movies as soon as they’re released as well as some of Hollywood’s best loved classics, all at the touch of a button on their Sky remote. movies will be available at the same time as they are released to DVD.

Another surprising feature of the new service is that customers who buy a movie through the Sky Store will also receive a DVD copy of their chosen film in the post a few days later, giving them a physical copy to keep aswell as the digital one.

The moves comes just a month after Sky announced the rollout of their new EPG to all 8 million Sky+ HD boxes, which now places equal emphasis on live over-the-air television and the various on-demand and catchup television services that Sky supports.

Nicola Bamford, Director of Sky Store said:

We know millions of people love to buy films and now it becomes even easier to do it straight from your sofa with Sky Store. The ability to now own a copy of your favourite film using ‘Buy & Keep’ is the perfect solution for any film fans wanting the immediacy of enjoying the latest movies on your main TV, with the added benefit of receiving the original DVD in the post.

Future enhancements to the service will include the ability to watch purchased movies via the Sky App on tablets and iPhones, giving even greater flexibility to the way in which you can watch your purchased content.

You have to hand it to Sky, their attempts to retain customers being lured away to all-you-can-eat streaming services like Netflix and LoveFilm are excellent. They are not just competing, but enhancing their offering with features like the free DVD copy and the fact that the movie can be re-downloaded should you change or upgrade your Sky+ box.
