EE Kestrel Smartphone Launches for £99

EE Kestrel Smartphone

Head into the store of your smartphone provider of choice, give them half a chance and no doubt some plucky young salesperson will try and entice you onto a plan for a premium handset regardless of whether or not you’ve asked them to. You can’t blame them though, because they only get a slight cut of the money with the majority going to the people who made the phone, so the more of them they sell the better, to stop their profit margins from being ‘percentaged’ away. EE are one of these very hopeful companies with the talented sales people and what not but rather than just hawking other people’s goods, the telecommunication network are now selling the EE Kestrel smartphone too, their own budget device.

The phone is actually made by Huawei, a company that has a significantly smaller market hold in the UK (and therefore they won’t be stepping on their own toes by helping EE out). But just what have the two companies managed to squeeze into the phone at the heart of this new partnership? Under the EE Kestrel’s hood is a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM to boot, keeping the phone at the ‘high quality budget’ side of the smartphone spectrum. Also showing its quality is its Android 4.3 Jelly Bean operating system, which is just one update shy of the latest Android 4.4 OS – this will also be handy if you plan on using the phone’s 4G network compatibility to download the latest apps.

Other boasted features by the EE Kestrel are its 5 megapixel camera and its 8GB of storage, both of which are decent offerings. However, the real ‘pitch’ that the phone makes is that it’s just £99 to buy and use on a pay as you go contact. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for an ‘ok’ phone and can’t afford to trump up the £40 or so monthly contract for high-end phones like the Samsung Galaxy S5 then you can get the EE Kestrel for free on a £13.99 tariff which includes 500MB of data a month, 500 minutes and unlimited texts. The phone is available from EE’s website or over the phone so click the link below to find out how to get it.
