Camping is a great way to get out of the city and away from technology for a while, but what if you can’t stand to be away from your smartphone or tablet? There are a wide variety of solar chargers out there that can send you some juice, but none can cook your food or keep you warm. The BioLite BaseCamp Stove can do all of the above and its up for funding on Kickstarter.

The BioLite BaseCamp Stove is a miraculous device if you like to camp or just love cool survivalist gear. The stoves large cooking surface is large enough to hold 8 burgers, and if you want to boil water it’s as simple as using the grill-to-boil lever. It’s also a environmentally friendly product as you won’t use fuel discs, propane or any other kind of material with the stove – just good old fashioned wood.biolite.basecamp-1

The stove works with biomass, so you’ll be able to use any dry sticks, pinecones, twigs or any other pieces of wood you find lying about. The company recommends sticks 1.5-inches or small in diameter, and it’s designed in a way that allows you to use less wood for a strong fire. Needless to say, you’re not going to have to walk around half the night scavenging wood to keep this stove going.

Wondering how the BioLite BaseCamp Stove can turn heat into electricity? Wonder no more…

The BaseCamp converts heat from the fire into usable electricity via a thermoelectric generator housed within the orange power pack.

This powers a fan that blows air back into the burn chamber for improved combustion. The surplus electricity is then sent to a USB port, allowing you to charge your devices.

The BioLite Basecamp isn’t going to power a flatscreen TV, but it will provide more than enough juice to charge your tablets, smartphones, and other gadgets. The company says a ‘strong’ fire and 30 minutes of charging time can provide around 5 hours of talk time, but we all know the mileage varies depending on your device, battery and what you’re running.biolite.basecamp-2

At the time of this writing, the BioLite BaseCamp Stove Kickstarter campaign has brought in $377,074 of its planned $45,000 goal, so it’s safe to say this one is getting funded and there are still 27 days left on the clock.

If you’re interested in picking up the BioLite BaseCamp Stove it’s going to set you back $299, and you won’t have to wait long to get it as it’s scheduled to roll out in October of this year.
