LG G Watch R is official and coming to IFA 2014

LG G Watch R

A few days ago LG dropped a teaser that showed a rounded smartwatch was in the works. Tonight, they let the world in on the secret while putting the Moto 360 on notice. Looks like we’re going to have a circular smartwatch standoff…

As the name implies, the LG G Watch R will have a round face – completely round with no black bar at the bottom ala the 360. As you can see from the new pics it’s as round and wristwatch looking as you can get, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg as things get really impressive when you find out what’s behind the G Watch R’s P-OLED screen.

  • Chipset: 1.2GHz Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 400
  • Display: 1.3-inch P-OLED Display (320 x 320)
  • Memory: 4GB eMMC / 512MB RAM
  • Battery: 410mAh
  • Operating System: Android Wear™ (compatible with smartphones running Android 4.3 and above)
  • Sensors: 9-Axis (Gyro/ Accelerometer/ Compass), Barometer, PPG
  • Dust and Water Resistant (IP67)

It’s certainly not what we expected, and in case you’re wondering the “PPG” means it has a pulse rate sensor. The smartwatch can help you stay healthy and also handle your missed calls and texts. The housing is made from of stainless steel and comes with interchangeable 22mm leather band. It is certainly easy on the eyes.LG.Gwatch-R

We’ve talked about the Moto 360 several times, and it was at the top of our gadgets lists for the fall. It still is at the moment, but it’s going to have some stiff competition from the R Watch along with a rumored round watch from Samsung and the i-wearable set to debut next month. We’ll have more details on the G Watch R next week during IFA 2014 in Berlin.
