Microsoft Miracast Dongle set to challenge the Chromecast

The Chromecast is still one of the best-selling gadgets around, and it’s a great way to stream content to the TV if you don’t have a media streaming player or Wi-Fi enabled television. It looks like the Chromecast may soon have some competition with the upcoming Microsoft Miracast Dongle.

A new filing with Wi-Fi Alliance and the FCC shows that Microsoft is working on a new streaming stick called the Microsoft Miracast Dongle. It has the model number PYAHD-10 and unfortunately that’s about all we know at this time. That said, it’s certainly possible it could be on the books for an IFA release as most gadgets are complete or almost ready for primetime by the time the hit the FCC.

It’s an interesting time for Microsoft to get into the streaming game, as its main competitor is Chromecast, but Android TV could change all that when it arrives this fall. Android TV will be more expensive than both those devices put together, but it will let you do a whole lot more than just stream Netflix and media from your handset.

Is there still a place for the Microsoft Miracast Dongle? That depends on the price tag and features, as the price will have to fall in line with the Chromecast. We should find out soon as the Microsoft Miracast Dongle will either arrive during IFA or soon after before the holiday season rolls around.
