Samsung finally unveiled one of the most leaked devices in recent memory today with the Samsung Galaxy Alpha. It’s the companies first “premium” handset of the year, and it’s headed to the UK next month for €599.

Unless you’ve been camping out on a mountain top or living in a cave, you probably already know about the Samsung Galaxy Alpha. If not, here’s the skinny. The Galaxy Alpha is Samsung’s latest smartphone and it’s the first handset to show Samsung is looking to change up their design. It has a metal build, and while it doesn’t have a 2K display, it’s still a powerful little handset.

The Galaxy Alpha specs include a 4.7-inch 720p display coupled with an Exynos octa-core chip and 2GB of RAM. The handset will have 32GB of internal storage, but for reasons we still can’t fathom, Samsung has decided to skip the microSD card slot. It’s not water resistant either, so you’ll want to keep that in mind if you’re on the fence about the Alpha.

Like snapping pictures? You’ll be able to take sharp ones thanks to the Galaxy Alpha’s 12MP/2.1MP camera combo, and you can expect the usual software features on the backend including HDR, Panorama and Beauty Face among others. Last but certainly not least, is the fingerprint scanner and heart rate sensor along with an 1860mAh battery.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is definitely a solid smartphone, but we’re still scratching our heads as to why they left out the SD slot as it’s been standard on 90% of their smartphones. It’s puzzling that they “almost” give people a perfect smartphone, but opt to go with a 720p display, no SD slot and no IP67 rating. Maybe they thought the metal build would be enough?

No firm release date has been given for the Galaxy Alpha, but it’s expected to touch down in the UK and across the globe this September for around €599/$800 unlocked. It will be cheaper with a 2-year contract as usual, but is still expensive for a 4.7-inch 720p handset.

Are you impressed with the Samsung Galaxy Alpha?
