An upgraded version of the LG Watch Urbane is announced with LTE

LG Watch Urbane LTE

It’s hard to “surprise” anyone ahead of a big tech expo these days, and most devices leak well before they hit the stage. We knew about the LG Watch Urbane, but LG has already announced a variant of the upcoming smartwatch with a few interesting features.

LG announced the LG Watch Urbane a little over a week ago, and we’re still not sure when it will arrive or how much it will cost. That hasn’t stopped the company from producing an alternative version of the Urbane which will come with LTE so you can make calls sans the smartphone. It will also feature a bigger 700mAh battery, 1GB of RAM, and allow you to have voice chats & make NFC payments.

All those nifty features will come at a cost, and we’re not just talking about the LG Urbane’s price. The company has ditched Android Wear for the LTE variant of the Urbane, which is disappointing to say the least. They will use their own custom wearable platform, and if it’s successful it may be the end of Android Wear on LG smartwatches for a while.

The LG Watch Urbane is supposedly LG’s answer to the upcoming Apple Watch, so it’s expected to carry a high price tag when it arrives. The LTE variant will probably be $50-$100 more than the regular model of the Urbane, so it may turn out to be one of the more expensive smartwatches we see this year. It may also prove to be its undoing as we’re not sure how well folks will warm up to a new OS when the previous models have all run Android Wear.

What do you think about the LTE version of the Urbane?
