Micromax isn’t a well-known brand in the states, but they are one of the biggest smartphone manufacturers in India. The company has become popular for producing budget handsets in the region, but they’re gearing up to get into the growing 4K TV business in a big way.

Micromax has just announced two new TV sets for India, and both models sport 4K resolution at 3,840 x 2,160 with a refresh rate of 60Hz. The OS running the show will be Android although the 42-inch Micromax 4K TV will run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean while the 49-inch edition comes with KitKat 4.4.2. We’re not sure why the OS would be outdated on one, but not the other, and have no idea of how the company handles updates on its TV sets.

As you’d expect, both of the 4K Micromax TV sets are “smart” units, so you’ll get the benefits that go along with that moniker. That means Wi-Fi, an Ethernet port, several USB ports, and HDMI 1.4 ports. The 42-inch model will have a dual-core chip under the hood to go along with 2GB of RAM, 2.5GBof storage and a microSD card slot. The 49-inch model has a similar setup with a dual-core chip, 1GB of RAM, 2.2GB of storage and a microSD card slot.

It’s great to see the prices on 4K TV’s get cheaper in some parts of the globe, even if the prices are still sky high in many regions. That said, there still isn’t a ton of 4K content available, which may be an issue for some folks until the format become more widely adopted. As for the price, the 42-inch model will sell for Rs. 39,990/$633, while the 49-inch 4K TV is listed at Rs. 49,990/$792.

Would you be interested in a 4K set from Micromax if they became available in your region?
