New Philips A19 LED bulbs set to arrive in May for $5

Getting people to switch to a new technology can be extremely difficult, even when it’s something as simple as a light bulb. LED bulbs are nothing new, but can still draw looks of disdain when you try to convince someone to switch. Well, that may change next month when the new Philips $5 LED bulb hits the streets.

One of the main drawbacks of LED bulbs for most folks are the price. Some don’t like the light the put off, but mainly it comes down to how much the cost compared to the old incandescent bulbs. You can pick up a 6-pack of 60watts for around $8-9 bucks at Lowes or Home Depot, whereas one LED bulb can cost you the same or more depending on the brand. Philips new bulbs will change that, and it could get more people to jump on the LED bulb bandwagon.

Starting in May, Philips will sell a new 60-watt equivalent LED bulb called the Philips LED A19. The bulb will come in two color temperatures with 2700K and 5000K, and are “shatter-resistant” as well which is never a bad thing. As someone who already uses the bulbs, I can tell you firsthand they can withstand a drop which is worth the price alone. No more broken bulbs.

The new Philips A19 LED bulbs will be priced at $4.97 without a utility rebate, which makes it the cheapest 60-watt LED equivalent around. Home Depot is set to carry a two-for-one pack for the first 90-days as well in honor of Earth Day, so you’ll want to act fast as we expect them to move quickly.

Are you currently using LED lighting in your home or do you still prefer incandescent bulbs?
