From the Far East: The Gionee Elife E8

Our last trip to the Far East has us looking at the Vivo Xshot 3S, a handset tipped to have a 4GB of RAM along with other interesting features. Now we’re going to take a look at another handset called the Gionee Elife E8, which has specs that put it on par with high-end handsets like Galaxy Note or Nexus 6.

The Gionee Elife E8 has just rolled through China’s TENAA, which is the equivalent to the FCC here in the states. When a smartphone passes through its gates, it usually means it’s nearing a release and we get a couple of quick picks along with partial or full specs. In the case of the Gionee Elife E8, we’re getting a bit more than we bargained for.

Fingerprint scanners are all the rage, and the Gionee Elife E8 will sport one on its backside right below the rear sensor. The front of the device sports a large 6-inch panel, and it’s going to have a sharp resolution of 2,560 x 1,440. Beneath the glass will beat an octa-core chip clocked at 3.0GHz, but the manufacturer is not listed. Rounding things out under the hood is 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage.

We’re not sure of the cameras on the Gionee Elife E8, but an 8MP sensor is mentioned. That could mean both cameras are 8MP, but it’s more likely the front is 8MP while the rear is 16MP. Due to its size, it won’t be the sleekest handset on the planet as it measures 164mm x 82.3mm x 9.6mm with a weight of 207grams. Other features to note include 5G LTE, a 3,520mAh battery, and Amigo 3.0 which is based off Android.

We’re not sure when the Gionee Elife E8 will hit the streets of China, but there should be plenty of opportunities to import one once it’s released. It will most likely be quite a bit cheaper than comparable handsets from well-known manufacturers, which could make it a bargain if you can get past the brand name and lack of a true Android OS.
