The Sharp AQUOS Crystal 2 is announced for Japan

A couple of years ago we wondered how large smartphone manufacturers would go with the screen along with how thing they could make it. Now it seems everyone is trying to do away with the bezel, as it’s the last way to enlarge the display without losing anymore pocket space. If you dig smartphones with razor-thin bezels, prepare to fall in love with the Sharp AQUOS Crystal 2.

Last year, Sharp unveiled the AQUOS Crystal for consumers in Japan. The smartphone actually broke free from its homeland and came to the states through Sprint and Boost which was a pleasant surprise – if thin bezels are your thing. It wasn’t the beefiest smartphone on the block, and neither is the Sharp AQUOS Crystal 2, but it’s definitely unique and its water-resistant to boot.

Like its predecessor, the Sharp AQUOS Crystal 2 has a distinct look that makes is seem more like a little flatscreen than a smartphone. It has a thin border surrounding the edge of the 5.2-inch display with a 2MP selfie snapper at the bottom instead of the top. On the inside, lies the same Snapdragon 400 found in the previous version, but the RAM has and storage capacity have been bumped up to 2GB and 16GB. Other features include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 4G LTE, NFC, and a 2,030mAh battery.

As with a lot of cool devices, the Sharp AQUOS Crystal 2 won’t launch in the U.S. or Europe. It’s one of several devices in Sharp and SoftBank’s 2015 lineup, and there’s a good chance it will hit other regions like the original sometime after launch.
