Mobile Game of the Week: Alphabear

Word games are truly a dime-a-dozen in the App stores, but every once in a while we’ll get something unique – and addictive. Alphabear from Spry Fox certainly fits that bill, and it’s our pick for the top mobile game of the week.

Alphabear is a game that’s all about bears and letters. You’ll use those letters to make words, which in turn makes the bears grow. Why? We don’t really know, but if you fail them they can turn to stone. Alphabear is far from your typical word game and it’s just as addictive as Spry Fox’s last title, Triple Town.

Each level in Alphabear consists of tiles on a playing field and a bear. Your goal is to form words with the letters given in order to make your bear will grow or split. The twist comes into play with the letter tiles as they have numbers that go down by a digit each time you make a word. If the number hits zero, that tile turns into a stone. The levels have different requirements in order for you to progress, and there are plenty of power-ups in the form of collectible bears.

As for the IAP’s, there are two kinds of them with honeycombs and coins. You don’t have to use either to play, and you will earn some along the way. For the most part, the game is free to play, but there is a paywall of sorts later in the game that will require you to wait or pay if you don’t have enough honeycombs.

If you dig word games, you’ll want to give Alphabear a go. It’s as solid as they get, and the type of game you can play in bursts or easily lose hours to. There are scores of bears to collect, and in a unique twist those bears will be saved permanently for use in future games. If you’re ready to give Alphabear a whirl, you can pick it up for free on Google Play or the App Store.
